If you fancy a castle day out but prefer roses to ramparts, then Walmer Castle might just be your dream destination. Sitting pretty between Deal and Dover, this seaside stunner is all about moated charm, lush gardens and a real sense of calm. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into the private hideaway of a green-fingered duchess.
Originally built by Henry VIII to keep the French at bay, Walmer Castle has morphed from coastal fortress to peaceful country residence. Over the centuries, it’s played host to everyone from the Queen Mother to Winston Churchill (not at the same time, sadly), and today it’s one of the most charming spots on the Kent coast.
Although the castle itself is compact, it’s beautifully preserved—and the real magic lies in what surrounds it.
Let’s be honest, the gardens at Walmer Castle are the main event. Think long, flower-lined borders, ancient orchards, and kitchen gardens that wouldn’t look out of place in a glossy lifestyle mag. There’s also the Queen Mother’s Garden—designed as a fragrant, secluded tribute to her time here.
Everything is beautifully looked after, and there’s a lovely flow to it all—you can stroll from a formal rose walk to a shaded woodland glade in a matter of minutes. Perfect for a slow wander or a picnic in the sun.
Kids can burn off some energy in the play trail and wild garden, and there’s a Woodland Walk that feels like something out of a storybook. The castle has just enough winding staircases and historic nooks to feel exciting, without being overwhelming.
Plus, the seasonal family trails are ideal if you’re visiting with younger children—they’ll be counting gargoyles and chasing butterflies before you can say “ice cream, anyone?”
Spring and summer are, of course, glorious—but don’t discount autumn, when the garden takes on golden hues, or even winter for frosty walks and castle-core vibes. And if you’re visiting around Christmas, you’re in for a treat—Walmer Castle transforms into a festive wonderland with twinkly lights, storytelling, live music and a magical Christmas Quest through the grounds. It’s especially lovely with the castle sitting just opposite the sea, giving the whole place that extra coastal sparkle. And because it’s less busy than some of the bigger names nearby, you’ve got space to soak it all in without the crowds.
Walmer is perfectly placed for a full day out. Start with coffee and a stroll around the grounds, then pop down to the seafront promenade or head into nearby Deal for lunch and a bit of boutique browsing. If you’re staying in one of our Deal cottages, it’s all right on your doorstep.
