Just when you thought you knew the Kent coast, Ramsgate Tunnels take things (literally) deeper. Tucked beneath the cheerful promenade and beachy charm of Ramsgate, these historic passageways are a time-travelling rabbit hole into Britain’s wartime past—with a side of surprisingly entertaining storytelling.
Once the UK’s largest civilian air raid shelter, these tunnels weren’t just a bolt hole—they were an entire underground city. With over 3 miles of tunnels carved into the cliffs, more than 1,000 people lived down here during WWII, complete with kitchens, sleeping quarters, and even a hairdresser. Iconic.
Today, it’s one of the quirkiest (and coolest) attractions on the east Kent coast—part museum, part immersive theatre, part “wait, did that mannequin just move?”
Tours are led by brilliantly clued-up guides who strike just the right balance of humour and heart. You’ll hear local stories, learn why Ramsgate played a key role in Britain’s wartime defence, and come away thinking, “why don’t I have a secret tunnel system?”
Yes, it’s a little chilly, and yes, you’ll be rocking a hard hat—but somehow it adds to the charm. Plus, the retro signage, atmospheric lighting and dramatic echo potential make it all a bit magical.
This one’s a win for multigenerational days out. Kids love the mystery and torchlit corners, grown-ups love the history, and everyone loves that it’s the perfect escape from sudden downpours or blazing sun.
Top tip: the tunnel floors are a tad uneven, so go for comfy shoes and leave the heels at home.
Tours run most of the year, but it’s best to check online and book in advance—it gets popular, especially on school holidays. Summer is fab, but winter adds extra atmospheric vibes (and you’ll be underground anyway).
Ramsgate’s main beach is just seconds away—ideal for a post-tour paddle or an ice cream reward. And if you fancy stretching the day out, grab lunch in town (we recommend Archive or The Falstaff) or hop over to nearby Broadstairs for a proper seaside crawl.
If you’re staying with us in Deal, Kingsdown, or St Margaret’s Bay, Ramsgate makes a brilliant day trip—easy to reach and packed with stories.
Charming, unexpected, and low-key fascinating, Ramsgate Tunnels are a reminder that Kent’s coastline isn’t just about sandcastles and sea swims. Sometimes the best stories are the ones buried just beneath the surface.
Bring a sense of adventure, a warm layer, and your inner history nerd—you’ll love it.
