The Montagu

Sandwich, Kent

Stay right in the heart of Sandwich on one of the town’s oldest lanes and surrounded by medieval streets. The Montagu is a beautifully restored holiday home combining character, comfort and an exceptional location, ideal if you want to park up, explore on foot and stay somewhere with real atmosphere.

Inside, original beams worn smooth over centuries sit within a professional restoration using solid, high-quality fittings and finishes. The palette is soft and muted, allowing the architecture to speak for itself which gives the house a settled, timeless feel.

Comfort is built in. Underfloor heating runs throughout, keeping
the house warm and cosy year-round, and there’s a large smart TV for relaxed evenings indoors after a day out.
The open-plan kitchen and living space form the heart of the home, designed for easy mornings, shared meals and time spent together.

The accommodation is almost entirely on one level with a single step into the kitchen from one of the bedrooms and another from the kitchen into the living space. The king-size bedroom has its own en-suite, while a second bathroom serves the rest of the house. From the second bedroom, a door opens onto the courtyard garden, bringing in natural light and a gentle, harmonious connection to the outdoors.

Just moments away, the River Stour offers beautiful riverside walks straight from the door. A short stroll also brings you to the departure point for riverboat trips where seal spotting is often part of the experience – a real highlight for children and adults alike.

For livelier days out, Blue Flag beaches at Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate are all within easy reach. For National Trust walks and dramatic coastal scenery, St Margaret’s Bay is around 25 minutes by car.

Golfers are exceptionally well catered for, with three superlative championship courses close by: Royal St George’s Golf Club, Prince’s Golf Club and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, all celebrated for their historic links and international standing.

Perfect for…
• Couples looking for a characterful break with everything on the doorstep
• History lovers drawn to medieval towns and original features
• Walkers exploring the River Stour and surrounding countryside
• Golfers looking to experience world-renowned links courses
• Families wanting calm surroundings offering beautiful beaches and coastal days out

The Montagu has a small courtyard accessed via the second double bedroom, perfect for morning coffee or soaking up the evening sun.

  • Parking

As with most homes in the historic centre of Sandwich, there’s no guaranteed on-street parking directly outside the house, and parking is restricted along the narrow medieval roads. If you’re arriving by car, you’re welcome to stop briefly to unload. Free parking is usually available on Manwood’s Road, around a 5–6 minute walk away. There’s also a convenient paid car park on the Quay, just a 2-minute walk from the house, as well as three larger pay-and-display car parks serving visitors to Sandwich. Most guests find parking straightforward and enjoy a relaxed stay once they’re parked up.

We have stayed here many times before and just love the huge lounge and dinning room. The location is brilliant with a view to die for. Booking process was very efficient and we were kept informed along the way. A quirky residence that ticks lots of boxes

This is a gorgeous little cottage in an idyllic location right on the beach. The view of the sea from the main bedroom window is amazing to wake up to. It makes getting out of bed very difficult. We left the top of the stable door open when we were home letting in the breeze and all the sounds of the sea, holidaymakers on the beach and seagulls in. The whole atmosphere had a lovely Enid Blyton vibe of long adventurous, hot sunny days at the seaside, calling the family in off the beach for their evening meal. It was the most perfect holiday. The cottage also has a log burner so I imagine it would be very cosy in colder seasons too.

The house was at a great location, right near the seafront and High Street. It was fabulously decorated with great attention to detail. The only slight drawback was that you couldn't park outside all day but there was plenty of parking on the surrounding streets.

Had an absolutely amazing stay for friends birthdays, the house was perfect in every. Immaculately clean, great central location for Deal town and the beach. Lots of top tips given at the house of where to visit, restaurants, bars etc and added bonus of a beautiful little garden. Thank you, would definitely return.

We had a ladies two night getaway and had a lovely time. Central House is a little quirky but in a nice way. The view of the sea from the 1st floor living room is fantastic and, surprisingly, the location is very quiet. Lovely big kitchen with all you need for preparing meals Lots of restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance. But, best of all, being able to run across the road to swim whatever the state of the tide. Wonderful!
