Otter’s Hatch

Sandwich, Kent

If it's quintessential cottage appeal that you crave, then Otter’s Hatch – reminiscent of Wind in the Willows – is perfect for you!

With its crooked walls and pink-blush exterior Otter’s Hatch is a charming Tudor cottage in the heart of the medieval town of Sandwich.

From winter warming escapes with cosy log fires and evenings spent curled up on the sofa, to long summer days spent relaxing in the secluded walled garden, Otter’s Hatch is a perfect year-round destination.

The cottage is positioned in the heart of Sandwich – a quiet medieval town settled on the
banks of the River Stour. There’s plenty to do: choose to spend your days in hiking boots or heels (whatever your style), before returning to curl up by the wood-burner or sip wine in the garden on hazy summer evenings under pink skies.

Culinary enthusiasts have a well-equipped kitchen in which to get creative, with an abundance of local produce – from the sea and land – readily available for those who want to enjoy a true taste of Kent. Upstairs enjoy a soak in the petite-clawfoot bath, and then snuggle up under lovely linens on the comfy beds.

A short drive from Otter’s Hatch is Sandwich Bay – a quiet stretch of beach frequented mainly by locals and the odd tourist. At low tide the beach is sandy and it’s not uncommon to spot the odd seal or two if you’re lucky enough! Spend the day relaxing here in summer, dip your toes in the Channel or stretch your legs with a walk or a cycle ride up to the buzzy seaside town of Deal – be sure to finish off with a well-deserved pint at the George and Dragon, a cosy inn dating back to 1446, just a hop and a skip from the house itself.
A NOTE IF YOU BRING A DOGGIE: The house allows one well behaved dog, but we request you do not leave your pooch unattended in the house at any time, so he/she is always happy and calm in his/her home-from-home. May we also ask that all traces of dog waste are removed from the garden. Our cleaners cannot dispose of dog waste and if we ask them to then they will charge us. So please could you take any waste with you.

Parking
?As with most properties in the centre of historic Sandwich, there is no on-street parking directly outside the house. If you’re bringing a car, there are good options nearby: free parking is usually available about a 5–8 minute walk away, and there’s a convenient paid car park on the Quay, just a 2-minute walk from the house. Most guests find it easy to drop off their bags and then park up for a relaxed stay.

We have stayed here many times before and just love the huge lounge and dinning room. The location is brilliant with a view to die for. Booking process was very efficient and we were kept informed along the way. A quirky residence that ticks lots of boxes

This is a gorgeous little cottage in an idyllic location right on the beach. The view of the sea from the main bedroom window is amazing to wake up to. It makes getting out of bed very difficult. We left the top of the stable door open when we were home letting in the breeze and all the sounds of the sea, holidaymakers on the beach and seagulls in. The whole atmosphere had a lovely Enid Blyton vibe of long adventurous, hot sunny days at the seaside, calling the family in off the beach for their evening meal. It was the most perfect holiday. The cottage also has a log burner so I imagine it would be very cosy in colder seasons too.

The house was at a great location, right near the seafront and High Street. It was fabulously decorated with great attention to detail. The only slight drawback was that you couldn't park outside all day but there was plenty of parking on the surrounding streets.

We had a ladies two night getaway and had a lovely time. Central House is a little quirky but in a nice way. The view of the sea from the 1st floor living room is fantastic and, surprisingly, the location is very quiet. Lovely big kitchen with all you need for preparing meals Lots of restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance. But, best of all, being able to run across the road to swim whatever the state of the tide. Wonderful!
