We think Deal Beach is one of Kent’s best-kept secrets. The wide sweep of smooth pebbles means it rarely gets as busy as many of Kent’s neighbouring beaches. Even on a warm summer’s day, you’ll always find a spot to lay down your towel. Add colourful fishing boats, clear water and a long promenade, and it’s easy to see why our guests keep coming back.
Stretching between Deal Castle and Sandown Castle, the beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Continue north beyond Sandown Castle and the coastline changes completely. It opens onto the famous links golf courses of Royal St George’s Golf Club and Prince’s Golf Club. With wide skies and uninterrupted sea views, it’s one of our favourite walks in East Kent.
Whether you’re starting the day with an early morning swim, heading out on a paddleboard or stopping for breakfast at Deal Pier Kitchen, Deal Beach has a wonderfully relaxed feel. Walk to the end of Deal Pier before you leave. Then turn around and look back towards the shoreline. Deal’s famous boatmen once rowed out from this very beach to ships anchored in the Downs. The view has changed remarkably little over the centuries.
Swimming At Deal Beach
Sea swimming is part of everyday life in Deal. On calm mornings you’ll often spot locals heading into the water before work. A friendly sea swimming group also meets here regularly for early morning dips throughout the year.
The water is usually clear and inviting. Deal Beach has a shingle shoreline rather than sand, so it shelves a little more quickly in places. As with any open-water swim, always check the tide and sea conditions before heading in. We recommend visiting Deal Tide Times Here.
Paddleboarding
When the sea is calm, Deal Beach is perfect for paddleboarding and kayaking. Early mornings often bring the best conditions, with flatter water and fewer people.
Bring your own paddleboard and launch from almost anywhere along the beach. From the water you’ll enjoy a completely different view of the pier and Deal’s historic seafront. You can check the tide times here.
Fishing
Fishing has shaped Deal for centuries and remains an important part of the town today.
Walk beyond Deal Pier towards Deal Castle and you’ll see colourful fishing boats resting on the pebbles after a day at sea. If you’re lucky, local fishermen will be selling their freshly landed catch directly from the beach. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.
Fancy having a go yourself? You can hire fishing rods from Deal Pier for around £20. It’s an easy way to enjoy a few hours by the sea, even if you haven’t brought your own equipment.
Bringing Your Dog
If you’re visiting with your dog, it’s worth knowing about the seasonal restrictions.
From 1 May to 30 September, between 9am and 6pm, dogs aren’t allowed on the main section of beach between Deal Castle and Sandown Castle.
The good news is that dogs are welcome beyond both castles all year round. Head north past Sandown Castle or south beyond Deal Castle. You’ll find miles of coastline where your four-legged friend can enjoy a run on the beach. Please check the Dover District Council website for the most up to date information.
